Houston is home to the largest medical center in the nation. Houston Community College is making sure there will be qualified technicians and nurses to serve the area’s health care needs throughout the twenty-first century. The theme of this year’s HCC Chancellor’s Symposium is “Allied Health: From Sports to Space,” and will introduce HISD and HCC students to the career opportunities and the educational pathways in Houston’s dynamic health care industry.
The third in Houston Community College Chancellor’s Symposium Series brings together more than 150 HISD high schools and HCC students for a full day of information about educational opportunities and career paths – and this year it is all about health care sciences. The Chancellor’s Symposium for Health Sciences is Friday, April 1 at HCC Coleman College for Health Sciences, 1900 Pressler Street, in the Texas Medical Center.
The keynote speaker for the event is Dr. Helen W. Lane. Dr. Lane is Chief Scientist for Biological Sciences and Applications Space Life Sciences at NASA/Johnson Space Center and the lead for the Space Life Sciences Academy that focuses on education for the NASA employees as well as outreach for K-20.
The Symposium will highlight the wide-ranging health care careers available to HCC and area high school students, and provide an overview of the various academic and career programs available at HCC and information about academic transfer to local and regional universities.
More than 350 Texas Medical Center and Gulf Coast health care executives, as well as members of the Greater Houston Partnership, leaders from HISD, trustees of the HCC District and elected officials are expected to attend.
