Message from Dr. Mary S. Spangler, Chancellor Houston Community College:

I want to encourage the HCC family to volunteer. There are many opportunities and many needs that would help our community return their lives to normalcy as quickly as possible. Since the college will be closed until Monday, I encourage faculty, staff and students whose lives and personal situations permit, to volunteer to help their neighbors. This is the time to demonstrate how giving Houston has been and continues to be.

Dear Members of the HCC family,

The impact of Hurricane Ike on the HCC family, HCC`s facilities, and Houston will take us all many months to overcome. Our lines of communication have been strained beyond our expectations. Our prayers, thoughts, and concerns are with you as we all manage through this disaster. To the best of our knowledge, there were no fatalities to members of our HCC family, and no one sustained serious injury.

As you know, the entire college has been closed since Friday, September 12, and we are working as quickly as possible to return all our sites to their normal operations. I assure you, as the assessment of the facilities is completed, we are working as quickly as possible to completely restore the college to its original condition.

This message to the college family must acknowledge and greatly appreciate the outstanding work of key HCC individuals on the administrative side of the college. During the heat of the storm’s aftermath, Deputy Chancellor Art Tyler led his team who worked tirelessly at great personal expense to assess the damages to the institution. Please join me in thanking the following individuals for helping determine our strategy to respond to the impact of no power, no electricity, no gas, and no food for an uncertain period of time: Winston Dahse and his administrative entire team, Hector Perez and his facilities team, Bill Carter and his IT team, and Greg Cunningham and his team of police and security officers. Because of their efforts we will be able to return to full operation quickly and efficiently.

To all of you, continue to focus your efforts on your families’ needs and personal property. We will overcome this tragic event together and move forward as a team strengthened by the knowledge that we will successfully deal with adversity.
