Student Spotlight: HCC student named outstanding apprentice

Houston Community College student Jonathan Henley has been named the Outstanding Apprentice for the 2009-2010 school year by the Houston Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee.

Henley is the winner of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 7thH District / National Electrical Contractors Association 5th District Top Apprentice contest.

The contest was held in Phoenix, Arizona on April 10, 2010, and had approximately 40 contestants representing Electrical JATC Apprenticeship Programs from Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Oklahoma and Kansas.

Henley has a 95.30 grade average in his five years of classroom and hands-on skills training with Melton Electric.

The competition tested contestant’s knowledge of electrical theory by requiring them to develop schematics from word problems for motor control, transformer and bell / buzzer problems, and then properly connecting the components for the problems on a hands-on board. Henley was one of only two contestants who scored a perfect board.

The contest honors the “Best of the Best” within the industry, and Henley is a representation of the many highly trained, highly qualified apprentices in HCC’s program.
